Countryside vs. Wasteland
God's Own Country
(Posted on my FB profile a few years back)
I am in God's own country , Kerala and I am a visiting Keralite being born and brought up outside it. The wide expanse of greenery, the slushy ponds, rain cast clouds and the view from various houses have always been a few of my favourite images associated with this land.
Also , I have always been very impressed with the common keralites sense of waste management.. turning kitchen waste into manure, burying bio degradable waste & burning dry waste into 'adippu' (traditional fire burner) and use it as fuel . Compost is a household word here.
The wow factor ends here. Now to think of it, maybe the common keralite never had the choice to deal with waste in any other way. THERE IS NO SYSTEM OF PUBLIC WASTE DISPOSAL !! (maybe except in a few cities). With growing use of plastic and non bio- degradable products as a result of modern life needs , Kerala is soon becoming "God's own wasteland"!
Lying along the roadside are piles and hillocks of plastic packets , diapers , bottles and a LOT of garbage. With increasing waste and less time and effort with people , our Kerala may soon not have our favourite images ... for us and our children!
It is time to do something about waste NOW!!
